The way people store and spend money has completely changed. A single bank account used to be enough. Now, in a single day, you might pay for a ride with GoPay, buy coffee with OVO, transfer to a friend via BCA, and invest in a mutual fund through Bibit. Your money is spread across four different places.
The problem: none of those apps give you the full picture. GoPay only knows GoPay transactions. OVO only knows OVO transactions. BCA Mobile only knows your BCA account. None of them know your total wealth, and none can tell you where your money is actually going.
The biggest challenge in tracking multi-pocket finances is transfers between accounts. When you top up GoPay from BCA, two "events" appear:
But neither is correct. This is neither an expense nor income. It's a transfer. If you record both as expense and income, your financial report doubles up and becomes inaccurate. If you don't record it at all, your app balance will never match your actual balance.
In a finance app that supports multiple accounts, register each place you store money as a separate account:
Enter the opening balance for each based on their current state. After this, the total of all accounts is your total liquid wealth. A number you've never seen on a single screen before.
Every time money moves between your own pockets, record it as a transfer. Choose the source account (e.g., BCA) and destination account (e.g., GoPay). BCA balance decreases, GoPay balance increases, total wealth unchanged. That's correct.
When paying GoFood from GoPay, record the expense from the GoPay account, not from BCA. This is important so your GoPay balance in the app always reflects your actual GoPay balance.
Total spending that day: Rp 77,000 (GoFood + coffee). Not Rp 877,000 that would appear if everything was recorded incorrectly.
With this system, you can finally answer questions that were previously unanswerable:
These questions can only be answered if you have one tracking system that covers all pockets, not three separate apps that don't talk to each other.
